into the governor's office.. jack: local 5's amanda krenz has more in tonight's big story. amanda? amanda according to the department of human services, no syrian refugees have ever resettled here in iowa... and they have never moved here after settling in another state. still, there's a possibility the federal government will want to place syrian refugees here in the future, and some iowans want our doors to be open. the point of this protest was to be peaceful, not political. still, you can read the signs and see these people have a clear message for governor branstad, don't stop syrian refugees from resettling in iowa. samantha 10:09 it really just hits me in the pill of my soul, mkaes my blood boil, it's just an inhumane act. samantha thomas organized this rally, as a way to support refugee rights, which they say are simply human rights. samantha 9:49 we need to focus on the greater good of humanity and all rights for all people. governor branstad ordered all state agencies to halt any work on syrian refugee

resettlements immediately sarah 16:17 it hits home because my mother was a refugee from the vietnam war and attending hoover high school we hav ea lot of refugees from myanmar, several african countries, hits home, personal to me. the protesters made their way up to the governor's formal office where they handed over a letter asking the governor to reconsider his decision to stop state services for syrian refugees. they hope he'll read it, maybe even take some time to meet with them about what they feel is more than refugee services... but a humanitarian issue. whitney 13:49 we disagree withthe way he handleed the situation and we think fear mongering is the opposite of what we need to be doing. amanda even though governor branstad doesn't have the power to stop syrian refugees from coming to iowa if the u-s state department sends them here, he can limit what state services they get like education and help with employment. live in the studio, amanda krenz, local five news, we are iowa. jack: today's protest is just one

and in grimes, a new facility opens today to cut down travel time for metro garbage collectors. metro waste authority held the grand opening of their new transfer station in grimes today. the transfer system acts as a waypoint between the trucks that pick up your trash at home and the landfill. instead of sending the garbage trucks to the landfill, a semi will load up all of that combined trash and take it to the landfill instead. so now instead of over a hundred trips to the landfill and back, they'll only take 30. jack/2ram it's the season of giving. and a 5-year-old ankeny boy is a great example. he raised 15 hundred dollars to help the ankeny police department. stephanie/2ram the department held a crowdfunding campaign to help them get a new k-9 unit. today the dog, who is a rescue, suited up for his new job.
